Step 1: Bring The Tools

In the first step of the hitch installation process, you need to bring some tools you will need while installing the hitch. These tools are:

  • Air saw
  • Power drill
  • Safety glasses
  • Screwdriver (Flathead)
  • Torque wrench with 19mm socket

Step 2: Get Your Toyota Prepared

After bringing all the required tools, your next task is to prepare your vehicle for installing a hitch on it. For this, you must remove the underbody panel of your highlander. You will find it on your vehicle’s driver portion. Also, you should take off your vehicle’s bumper pin and bracket at that time. You will find them on your vehicle’s passenger part.

Step 3: Removing The Plugs

Now, you have to take off the plastic plugs using the screwdriver. You will find them on your vehicle frames’ lower part. After removing the plugs, these three points will be your hitch attachment points.

Step 3: Lift The Hitch In Position

It’s time to lift your hitch in its position now. You already know where the attachment points are. So, place the hitch accordingly to those points. Make sure that you are placing the hitch properly in its place.

Step 4: Install All The Hardware

After that, you must secure the hitch. For this, you have to install all the hardware you got with the hitch on your vehicle’s frame. There are supposed to be three bolts on each side of your vehicle’s frame with conical tooth washers.

Step 5: Get All The Bolts Tighten

Now, you must get all the bolts tightened. Use the torque wrench and socket to make all the hardware you have installed tighten. While tightening the bolts, you must follow the right torque amount. The torque amount will be mentioned on the user manual of your hitch.

Step 6: Reinstall Everything

Finally, you have to reinstall everything you have removed earlier. You need to get the panel, bumper and plug back in their place. So, reinstall these parts following the way you have removed them. One issue that you might face is the panel may not fit properly. In this kind of case, you have to trim the panel. That’s it. You are ready to have a test ride with your newly installed hitch.
