You never know when you will find yourself stranded in remote places with your vehicle stuck and a winch is your best friend when it comes down to getting your vehicle out of such a muddy situation of sorts. 

But then again, life can be cruel at times as even though you have a winch, there is not a remote for it at that instance. For such an unfortunate chain of events, you should always know of other ways of getting your work done and in this article, we are going to help you get your car out of the mud using a winch with no remote available in the following step-by-step guide below.

How to Use Winch Without Remote

1. Prepare your winch cable

First and foremost, make sure your winch cable is in good operating order. To do so, lengthen the winch cable and inspect it for smoothness. Any weak places in the cable will be disregarded if you do so. What’s the best way to stretch it? 

To do so, unwind your winch line to its maximum length, hook to a secure anchor point, and then pull your car slightly. Remember to wrap the drum with at least five wraps.

2. Anchor your vehicle

Like you would do for winching any other day, you do need to find a secure anchor for your winch that can hold your vehicle’s weight whether it’s a truck or a car. Basic anchoring points would be trees or big blocks or bug boulders etc.

3. Disengage/Loose Lever to release winch cable

There should be a lever on your winch. Labels that state “free spool” or “disengage” should be placed next to the lever. In order to allow the winch cable to spool freely out of the winch, you need to turn the lever to the disengage label. 

4. Pull out the winch cable

So once you have put the lever to disengage, you will be able to pull out the wire easily to the anchor point while maintaining tension and it would also enable your wire to not be tangled. 

5. Set up the pull

The anchor point you choose must be sturdy enough to withstand the tension of winching. Make your anchor point in a straight line similar to the direction in which the vehicle would move for the best winch output. 

This will allow your winch to reach its full potential and will also allow the rope to wound neatly onto the drum. If you hook the wire at the lower position, you’ll be able to receive the most significant for.

6. D-shackle

Afterward, you should wrap a strap around the anchoring point that you have found and position both ends of the strap towards you. Then attach d-shackles at both ends of the strap

7. Connect D-shackle to the hook of the winch

It’s now up to you to employ the winch hooks. Winch hooks are usually included with winches. To find them, look at the winch’s tip. After connecting the D-Shackle and winch hook, keep the points facing up.

8. Winch line must have a damper

There are times one may experience a winch cable break because of too much stress while winching. In that case, you would want to minimize the tension you put on the cable and for that, you need to place a winch cable damper in the middle of the cable. This means you put it in between the anchor point and the winch.

But what can you put down as a damper? Well, you don’t have to go too far. A damper can be your jacket or a piece of clothing or even a branch of a tree but you need to make sure of its weight which needs to be of considerable amount. While putting the damper down and entering it in the roller head, make sure to remove the cable wrap.

Another side note would be to not remove or replace the cable wrap during winching, not until the tension is off. And in case it falls off by itself, you will be required to put tension off before returning to cover

9. Put stress on the winch cable

Before you begin pulling your vehicle, you must first lengthen your winch cable. You can do this by starting the winch and slowly pulsating it until the desired tension is reached. Keep a close check on the cable during the winching procedure to ensure that the winching is smooth enough onto the drum.

10. Engage Lever

Remember how you disengaged the lever to let your winch cable-free spool? Well, now that you are pretty much set up to start your winching, you may put the lever back into “engage” by moving it in the opposite direction from before so that the cable does not spool anymore.

11. Hotwire the winch

Now we come to the main element of our whole winch operation without a remote. So there are basically two ways you can operate your winch, one is obvious with a remote and the other would be with wired modes. This method requires you to jump-start the winch like you would do for a vehicle when its battery isn’t working. 

To get it started, you’ll need to hardwire a switch into your car or truck’s cab. The basic idea is to pull on the solenoid pack lid to remove it, then short wires between the prongs for the connector. You’ll be able to quickly locate the cord that controls the winch this way. 

Once you have that cable, you can either hardwire a switch to it or use a generic plug disconnect to connect it to it and you’re ready to go. We’ll now get into the details in a step-by-step guide for shorting the wear.

At first, you’ll need to disengage positive lead from the battery but do keep the ground lead attached. Secondly, the 3 wires connecting the controller and three motor ends should be marked and disconnected. To recognize them, you can find them on the motor poles with labels that say “A,” “F1,” and “F2.” 

Then, attach A and F1 using a jumper wire of length of 5-6 inches. Connect the battery to the F2 motor post once more. As a result, the battery will only move in one direction. Once that is done, take a jumper wire once again and connect A and F2 this time, as well as the battery and F1. This time, the motor will be in reverse motion.

12. Take safety measures

Now, we take safety precautions very seriously throughout any of our winching processes and it’s no different in this method of doing the operation either. So before you begin the winching operation, make sure the cable wrap is securely in place in the middle of the cable and that the winch cable has reached a minor tension state.

 Because you won’t be utilizing the remote, you have to start your vehicle from either inside of it or the side you’ll need to be careful with that for obvious reasons. Slowly start the winching process by manually turning on the winch motor from a safe area. 

Know this: If you take up the slack in the cable too rapidly, the rope will start to jerk. Taking up the slack too soon could put the winch and cable under strain. And you should also Keep an eye out for passing people or animals to ensure they are not injured if something goes wrong. Do consider all safety measures you would usually take in addition to what we said above. 

13. Engage winch for pull

You’re now ready to start the pull since you have adequately set everything up for the winching process. When starting the winch, test the winch solenoid to confirm that it will activate the winch motor. During the operation, you need to consider that anything can happen. Too much tension on a cable might cause it to break. 

You should maintain winching until your car moves from its prior position after you’ve found the proper tension from the position that it has been stuck in. The procedure should be calm and steady, and it is critical to take small rests in the middle of the procedure, for obvious reasons. Because it allows the battery to recharge and, as a result, provides the most pulling power.

So once you are done with the winching procedure and the vehicle is on stable footing and maybe securely driven; stop the winching procedure by lowering the tension and shifting the vehicle into park gear with the parking brake engaged. 

Because you won’t be using the controller, turn off the winch motor and disconnect the winch wire from the anchor point, making sure it’s not tangled. If the winch line becomes tangled during the procedure, it may cause issues during the next winching.

You must carefully rewind your wire cable. When winding adjacent to the roller head, be careful not to get your fingers pinched.

Now that you have securely removed the vehicle, all that’s left is for you to pack your belongings. Rewinding the wire cable to the winch drum is the first step. However, while the procedure appears straightforward, you must proceed with caution like you always should!
